The Peace I Never Expected: After Divorce
The Peace I Never Expected: Almost 15 Months After Divorce
I kept waiting for the breakdown. Instead, I discovered my breakthrough.
It's Saturday morning, October 24, 2026. I'm sitting outside enjoying the beautiful Arizona sunshine, sipping my coffee from my Halloween mug, and thinking about something that continues to surprise me.
I'm at peace.
Not just having a good day. Not just putting on a happy face for the world. I'm talking about a genuine sense of calm that seems to have settled into almost every corner of my life.
And quite frankly, I'm shocked!
On August 5, 2025, my divorce became final. After nearly five decades of sharing my life with someone, I was officially on my own.
Today, almost 15 months later, I find myself reflecting on everything that has happened, everything that has changed, and especially everything that hasn't happened.
Because there is something I've been waiting for that simply hasn't arrived.
The breakdown.
The tears.
The overwhelming sadness.
That moment when I wake up and think, Oh my gosh, what have I done?
But here I am.
Still waiting.
And instead of falling apart, I'm finding myself more relaxed, more content, and more at peace than I ever imagined possible.
The Responsibilities Are Real
Now, don't misunderstand me. Life on my own isn't without its challenges.
For the first time in my adult life, everything is my responsibility.
The house? Mine to maintain.
The car? Mine to service, repair, and worry about.
The bills? All mine.
The unexpected expenses? You guessed it. Mine too!
And yes, sometimes I have to remind myself that just because I want something doesn't mean I need to buy it.
I'm still learning to reel in my spending. And believe me, for a woman who loves Christmas, decorating, traveling, and enjoying life, that can be quite the challenge!
There is no one else to turn to and say, "Can you take care of that?"
No one else to share the household decisions or the endless list of things that need attention.
From the outside looking in, you might think I would be completely overwhelmed.
But here's the funny thing.
I'm not.
I have more responsibility than ever before, yet somehow I feel less stressed.
And that realization has made me stop and think.
Maybe It Was Never the Responsibilities That Exhausted Me
I've been asking myself why I feel so calm.
After all, nothing about my life has become simpler in a practical sense.
There are still problems to solve, appointments to make, bills to pay, and decisions to consider.
But something significant has changed.
I no longer feel like I'm negotiating my peace.
I don't wake up wondering what kind of day someone else is going to have.
I don't feel responsible for managing another person's emotions.
I don't have to explain every decision or wonder whether my choices will create tension.
I can simply live.
And I think I'm beginning to understand something.
Sometimes the weight we carry isn't the work we have to do. It's the emotional weight we don't even realize we're carrying.
I didn't fully recognize how much that weight affected me until it was gone.
I Keep Waiting for the Tears
This is probably the part that surprises me most.
After a relationship that spanned almost five decades, I expected grief to come crashing through my front door.
And perhaps someday I'll have a moment of sadness. I'm certainly not suggesting that I'm immune to emotions or that my past didn't matter.
It mattered tremendously.
I shared most of my adult life with someone. We raised two wonderful sons. We built a home, created memories, celebrated milestones, and lived through the ordinary and extraordinary moments that make up a lifetime.
I don't regret the family we created.
And I don't need to erase those years to appreciate the life I'm living today.
But I also don't need to pretend that I'm devastated when I'm not.
I'm happy.
There. I said it.
I'm genuinely, wonderfully, unexpectedly happy.
And I'm no longer questioning whether I'm supposed to feel something different.
I Don't Need to Defend My Peace
Another unexpected change has been my ability to simply let things go.
There are times when I'm misunderstood.
There are times when someone else's version of events makes me out to be the bad guy.
And you know what?
I'm okay.
That doesn't mean I agree with their version of the story.
It doesn't mean I don't have feelings.
And it certainly doesn't mean I don't know what happened.
It simply means I no longer feel obligated to defend every decision I've made.
For much of my life, I wanted to be understood. I wanted people to know my intentions, to recognize my efforts, and to see my side of things.
But I'm discovering that not everyone needs to understand my journey.
I know my truth. I know why I made my decisions. And that's enough.
There is an incredible freedom in reaching a point where someone can misunderstand you and you can still sleep peacefully at night.
I'm not trying to win an argument.
I'm not trying to rewrite history.
I'm not trying to convince anyone that I made the right choice.
I'm simply living with that choice.
And I'm loving my life.
Learning to Love My Own Company
At 68 years old, I'm experiencing something entirely new.
I'm living alone for the first time in my adult life.
And rather than feeling lonely, I'm discovering how much I enjoy my own company.
I love waking up and deciding what my day will look like.
I love having coffee outside and watching the sunshine fill my backyard.
I love working on Champagne Girlie®, learning new skills, creating books, developing ideas, and dreaming about what comes next.
I love spending time with my girlfriends, traveling, enjoying my family, and celebrating life's little moments.
And yes, I even enjoy knowing that if I decide to spend an entire Saturday cleaning my house without makeup, that's exactly what I'm going to do!
There's no grand explanation needed.
No permission required.
Just me, making my own decisions.
It may sound ordinary, but after a lifetime of sharing my world with someone else, that freedom feels extraordinary.
Maybe This Isn't a Breakdown. Maybe It's a Breakthrough.
For almost 15 months, I've been waiting for the emotional storm.
But what if there isn't one coming?
What if this peaceful feeling isn't temporary?
What if the reason I haven't fallen apart is because, somewhere along the way, I finally found my way back to myself?
Maybe I don't need to keep waiting for sadness to prove that my marriage mattered.
Maybe I don't need to feel guilty about being happy.
Maybe I don't need to explain why this chapter feels so right.
Maybe I'm not waiting for a breakdown after all.
Maybe what I've been experiencing all this time is my breakthrough.
And what a beautiful discovery that has been.
The Best Years Aren't Behind Me
At 68, I'm not interested in spending the rest of my life looking backward.
I have too many things I still want to do.
Books to publish.
Places to visit.
Friendships to nurture.
A business to grow.
New experiences to embrace.
And a whole lot of living left to do!
Will there be challenges? Absolutely.
Will I make mistakes? Without a doubt.
Will there be unexpected expenses, frustrating days, and moments when I wonder what I've gotten myself into?
I'm sure of it!
But here's what I know today.
I can handle those things.
I can make decisions, change direction, learn something new, ask for help when I need it, and figure things out along the way.
And I can do all of that without sacrificing my peace.
That may be the greatest gift this chapter of my life has given me.
My Champagne Girlie® Thought for Today
If you're going through a divorce, retirement, an empty nest, or any other major life transition, I want you to know something.
Your next chapter doesn't have to look like anyone else's.
You don't have to grieve on someone else's schedule.
You don't have to explain your happiness.
And you certainly don't have to apologize for finding peace in a life that looks different from the one you originally imagined.
For me, the greatest surprise of this journey hasn't been discovering that I can survive on my own.
It's discovering just how much I love it.
I'm not simply getting through my days.
I'm enjoying them.
I'm growing.
I'm learning.
I'm laughing.
I'm planning.
I'm THRIVING!
And boy, am I loving it!
Because life didn't end…
It finally got FABULOUS! 🥂💕
