One Year Later: Filing for Divorce Saved Me

One year ago, I sat with paperwork in front of me that I never imagined I would sign.

After nearly 48 years with the same man, filing for divorce felt impossible. Not because the marriage was healthy anymore, but because it had become my identity. I had spent most of my adult life being someone’s wife, someone’s support system, someone who held everything together — even when I was quietly falling apart inside.

I remember staring at those papers thinking,
“How did my life end up here?”

The truth is, marriages rarely fall apart overnight. Sometimes love slowly disappears in silence. Sometimes you wake up one day realizing you’ve spent years shrinking yourself, settling, surviving, and convincing yourself that lonely is better than starting over.

I stayed longer than I probably should have. Many women do. We stay for family, for history, for comfort, for fear, for finances, for hope, and sometimes simply because we don’t know who we are outside of the life we built.

But one year ago, I finally chose myself.

And today?
I can honestly say filing for divorce saved me.

Not because it made life easy — it didn’t. Starting over at this stage of life is emotional, scary, overwhelming, and sometimes lonely. But it also gave me something I had not felt in years: peace.

Over the last year, I’ve learned how to live for myself again. I launched the Champagne Girlie website and brand, started writing and podcasting, focused on my health, traveled with girlfriends, took a Mexican cruise, spent precious summer months in Michigan with family, and discovered joy in simple things again.

Most importantly, I stopped waiting for someone else to choose me.

I started choosing myself.

And here’s something I want every woman reading this to know:
You do not need unlimited money, a perfect body, or a flawless life to begin again. I’m doing this on a limited budget, and I’m still creating a life that feels beautiful, meaningful, peaceful, and exciting. Being fabulous does not have to be expensive.

Some of my favorite moments this year cost almost nothing:
Morning coffee in silence on my back patio.
Laughing with girlfriends.
Long walks.
Summer nights in Michigan.  Fall nights in Arizona.
Solo camping trips, I’m talking in a tent!
Decorating my own space.
Feeling emotionally free for the first time in years.

There are still hard days. Healing is not linear. But I no longer wake up feeling emotionally invisible inside my own life.

One year later, I realize something important:
I didn’t lose my life when my marriage ended.

I found myself.

So if you’re reading this while standing at your own crossroads — scared, uncertain, heartbroken, or wondering if it’s too late — please hear me when I say this:

It is not too late to reclaim your happiness.
It is not too late to rediscover yourself.
And it is never too late to ask yourself the question that changed my life:

Why not now? 🥂
